“Revival Fire Among Indigenous People”

Since 2013, AYC (Aboriginal Youth Community) has been serving to restore the indigenous youths and bring them healing for the past 12 years. In June, AYC visited Lillooet to spread the love of God among these nations.

The AYC team, composed of 28 members including the members from Canada Soongsil Church, headed to Lillooet once again to host another worship concert. There were complications even before the departure including the forest fire near Lillooet. However, the team prepared for the journey in prayer, trusting that God would send rain to quench the fire, and God graciously sent rain to the area a few days before the concert and the day after. Not only that, despite the pouring rain the day before the concert, the morning of the concert was cloudless and clear until the day the team left the area. The team was amazed at the faithfulness of the Lord.

After 4 hours of driving to Lillooet, the team shared the smokies next to the Lillooet museum and spread the name of Jesus until the evening. Many locals gathered; some danced along to the music and some interacted while sharing food. It was beautiful to see everyone gathered under the name of Jesus and praising the Lord. The team spread the gospel to those who had come to the concert and showed the love of Jesus as they invited the people to the 7 pm worship.

Gary Payne, the head pastor of a local church in Lillooet, talked about the May Lillooet concert as follows. “The indigenous people of the area were persecuted by so-called Christians through many different methods including the residential school. When a foreigner comes, they don’t trust them easily but observe them from afar. They will approach you not when you talk love, but when you act love. Have patience with them.” He expressed that he wishes for the AYC team to come to Lillooet every month. He also added that ever since the concert in May, people became more open to hearing about the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the chiefs testified that there had been peace and calmness throughout the whole town. He mentioned that the dark spirits that had once grasped Lillooet in the spiritual realm were destroyed through the worship in May.

It has already been about two months since Seongyoon Chang began his youth ministry in Port Hardy. Brother Chang travels to Port Hardy on Mondays and returns to Vancouver on Fridays, repeating this schedule while organizing youth gatherings every day with various children from different nations. Now, two months later, some children come regularly, and those who consistently listen to the word of God and grow spiritually have also emerged. Compared to before, many more children from Port Hardy have expressed their willingness to attend AYC and are preparing for it. With the start of the summer vacation, Brother Chang plans to spend the remaining two months reading the Bible more deeply with the children and studying it together. When Brother Chang's four-month short-term mission ends, the children who studied the Bible and formed a community together in Port Hardy will again have to stand on their own without a leader. AYC is looking for missionaries who can consistently care for and serve these areas. They ask for prayers for this ongoing ministry and for a new leader to continue this work by God's grace.

From July 24 to 27, AYC's main event, the summer conference, will be held. The AYC summer conference is an important event where about 150 to 200 Indigenous youth from across Canada, including Saskatchewan, Yellowknife, and Vancouver Island, gather at the Nanoose Bay Pentecostal Camp to experience God and hear the gospel. We ask for continuous prayers for the volunteers to experience God's grace from the preparation process for the indigenous children to receive the fire of the Holy Spirit during the camp, and for leaders to rise among them to spread the flame of revival throughout the indigenous nations.

From the end of July, Indigenous children who want to experience God more deeply will go on a Vision Trip to Korea. The ultimate goal of the AYC Vision Trip is to give indigenous children who go to Korea hope for living as future leaders by learning about the history of Christian reformation in Korea. Christine Nelson from Port Hardy, who participated in last year's Vision Trip, testifies that her life changed after she met Jesus during the Vision Trip. She moved to Vancouver, receiving leadership training and attending prayer meetings, and is now serving as a worship dance leader at AYC. She has left behind a life of alcoholism behind her and is now more focused on learning about God's Word.

In the Port Hardy area alone, more than 40 people have lost their lives this year due to suicide and drug overdoses. Every day, some children desperately need Jesus. As someone living in Canada, especially in BC, it is truly heartbreaking to see Indigenous people dying without knowing Jesus. Therefore, the AYC team is determined to continue striving for indigenous missions and calls for the participation of many Christians. “캐나다 원주민들 가운데에 부흥의 불을”

지난 2013년부터 원주민 청소년들의 회복을 위해 사역 해 온 AYC (Aboriginal Youth Community)가 5월 중 Lillooet지역을 방문하며 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 시간을 가졌다.

숭실 교회 멤버들과 함께 총 28명의 봉사자들로 이루어진 AYC 팀은 또다시  Lillooet 지역에 두번째 워십 콘서트를 열기 위해 발걸음을 향했다. 준비 하는 동안 출발 하기도 전부터  Lillooet 근방에 산불이 나는 등 여러가지 어려운 소식들이 들렸다.  하지만 팀은 산불 진화를 위한 비를 내려 주실 것을 주님께 기도 하며 믿음으로 여정을 준비했고, 감사하게도 콘서트  시작하기 바로 전날과  끝난 다음날에 비가 오는 경험을 하게 되었다. 그 뿐만 아니라 전날 쏟아지던 비가 무색할 정도로 콘서트 당일 아침부터 다음 날 오후 팀이 야외 콘서트를 무사히 마치고 떠날때까지 구름 한 점 없이 청량한  날씨를 허락하셔서  주님의 신실함에 팀들은 감탄을 아끼지 않을 수 없었다. 

장장 4시간을 달려 Lillooet에 도착한 팀은 마을 중앙에 위치한 박물관 옆에서 핫도그를 나누며 저녁까지 예수님의 이름을 선포했다. 지역 주민들은 하나 둘씩 모여 들기 시작했고 어떤 이들은  찬양에 동참하며 춤을 추기도 하고 다른 이들은  음식을 같이 나누며  교제하는 시간을 가졌다. 모두가 하나되어 한 마음으로 예수님을 찬양하는 일을 보는 것은  참으로 아름다운 일이었다.  팀은 콘서트를 찾아 온 영혼들 각자 각자에게 복음을 전하고 예수님의 사랑을 알리는 귀한 시간을 보내며  만난 모든 사람들을 7시에 있을 예배에 초대함으로 행사를  감사히 마쳤다.

5월에 Lillooet 에서 있었던 콘서트에 대해 그  지역 교회에서 목회를 하고 계신 Gary Payne 목사는 이렇게 말했다. “이 지역 원주민들은 기숙학교를 포함한 여러 과거의 제도들을 통해 잘못된 기독교인들에게서 박해를 받았었다. 그래서 외부인이 왔을 때 쉽게 믿지 못하고 멀리서 관찰을 하곤 한다. 그들은 사랑을 말하는 것이 아닌 사랑을 행동함을 보고 당신에게 다가갈 것이다. 인내심을 갖고 그들을 대해 주기 바란다.” 그는 AYC 팀이 규칙적으로 올라왔으면 한다는 의사를 표현했다.  또한 5월 콘서트 이후 예수님을 전하는 것에 대한 거부감이 사람들 사이에서 크게 줄어 들었다고 덧붙이기도 했다. 그리고 8월 초에 올 토론토 큰빛 교회 팀 Lillooet 방문에 대해 좋은 길이 열리려 하고 있다는 것 역시 귀띔해 주었다.  또 다른 주장들 중 한 명은 콘서트가 있었을 당시 마을 전체에 평화가 감돌았다고 간증했다. 5월 콘서트 이후 마을에 사건 사고가 줄어들었고 여러 원주민들이  AYC 재방문 여부를 물었 왔다고 말했다. 그는 5월 AYC 예배로 인해 영적으로 Lillooet을 잡고 있던 어둠의 세력이 무너졌다고 전했다.

한편, 지난 5월 13일에 Port Hardy 지역 아이들에게 복음을 전하러 들어간 장성윤 형제는 청소년 사역을 시작한지 벌써 두 달 가량이 흘렀다. 장성윤 형제는 월요일에 Port Hardy 지역으로 올라갔다가 금요일에 다시 Vancouver로 내려오는 것을 반복하며 매일 여러 마을 아이들을 데리고 청소년 모임을 꾸리는 사역을 하고 있다. 두 달이 지난 지금은  고정적으로 오는 아이들이 생겼고 말씀을 꾸준히 듣고 성장하는 아이들 역시 생겨났다. 이 전에 참석했던 것보다 훨씬 많은 Port Hardy 출신 아이들이 AYC 참석 의사를 비췄고 함께 AYC를 위해 준비하고 있다. 방학이 시작되어 시간이 많아진 아이들을 데리고 장성윤 형제는 앞으로 남은 두 달간 아이들과 함께 성경을 더 깊이 읽으며 공부할 계획이라고 밝혔다.이번 장성윤 형제의 4개월간의 단기 선교가 끝나면 Port Hardy에서 함께 성경을 공부하고 공동체를 꾸린 아이들은 또 다시 리더 없이 자립해야 하는 상황에 놓이게 된다. AYC는 꾸준히 이 지역들을 마음에 품고 섬겨 줄 수 있는 선교사를 찾는 중에 있다. 하나님의 은혜로 지금도 진행 중인 이 사역을 위해, 그리고 이 사역을 이어갈 사역자가 생겨날 수 있도록 함께 기도를 부탁하는 바이다.

다가오는 7월 24일부터 27일까지는 AYC의 메인 행사인 여름 컨퍼런스가 개최될 예정이다. AYC 여름 컨퍼런스는 Saskatchewan과 Yellowknife, 그리고 Vancouver Island를 포함한 캐나다 전 지역에 살고 있는 약 150명에서 200 여명가량의 원주민 청소년 아이들이 Nanoose Bay Pentecostal Camp 에 모여 하나님을 경험하며 복음을 들을 수 있는 중요한 행사이다. AYC의 가장 큰 행사인 만큼 준비 과정 가운데에서부터 하나님의 은혜를 더욱 경험하고 캠프 가운데에서도 원주민 아이들이 성령의 불을 받을 수 있도록, 또한 그들중  리더들이 일어나 원주민 전 지역에 부흥의 횃불을 전하는 자들이 될수 있도록 꾸준히 기도 해 주기를  부탁한다.

7월 말부터는 하나님을 더욱 깊이 경험하고 싶은 원주민 아이들을 데리고 한국으로 Vision Trip 을 가게 된다. 한국에 간 원주민 아이들이 한국 기독교 개혁의 역사를 배우면서 앞으로 리더로서의 살아갈 희망을 더 갖게 하는 것이 AYC Vision Trip의 궁극적인 목표이다. 작년 Vision Trip에 참가한 Port Hardy 출신의 Christine Nelson은 Vision Trip을 통해 예수님을 만나고 삶이 변했다고 간증한다. 그녀는 Vision Trip 이후 Vancouver로 내려와 리더십 트레이닝을 받고 기도모임을 참석하며 AYC에서 워십댄스 리더로 활동하고 있다. 이 전에 술과 담배에 의존해서 살았던 삶을 뒤로하고 그녀는 현재 하나님의 말씀을 배우는 일에 더욱 집중하고 있다.Port Hardy 지역에는 올해만 40명 이상의 사람들이 자살과 약물 과다 복용등으로 목숨을 잃었다. 매일 매일이 예수님이 절실히 필요한 아이들인 것이다. 캐나다, 특히 BC주에 사는 사람으로서 예수님을 모르고 죽어가는 원주민들을 가까이에서 보게 되는 것은 참으로 안타까운 일이다. 그리하여 AYC 팀은 앞으로도 계속해서 원주민 선교를 위해 힘쓸 것을 각오하며 많은 그리스인들의 동참 또한 호소하는 바이다. 이 사역에 참여하길 원한다면 매주 토요일마다 2시에 Potter’s Place Mission에 있는 기도 모임에 참석하여 아이들을 품고 함께 중보 할 수 있기를 바라며  지금까지의 사역과 다가오는 사역에 대해 더 알고 싶다면 AYC 공식 홈페이지(aycmission.com)에서 찾아볼 수 있다.
