“God opens up the way to the gospel for Lillooet and Port Alberni”

Since 2013, AYC (Aboriginal Youth Community) has been serving to restore the indigenous youths and bring them healing for the past 12 years. In May, AYC visited Lillooet and Port Alberni to spread the love of God among these nations.

From May 17th to 18th, 13 members from AYC and 7 members from Vancouver Korean Full Gospel Church drove 4 hours north of Vancouver and reached Lillooet in order to proclaim the gospel. They were able to connect with Gary Payne, the head pastor of Lighthouse Church, and spend time sharing smokies and worshipping next to the museum located at the centre of Lillooet. The team arrived early to set up two tents. At one of the tents, they handed out smokies to the locals that attended the event, and at the other tent, they worshipped from 1pm to 6pm continuously and proclaimed the name of Jesus. A few of the volunteers had the opportunity to play basketball with the youths and build relationships with them. Everyone that participated in the event was invited to the worship service taking place at Lighthouse Church at 7pm.

When 7pm came around, a few people came to the church for the worship service. Although there were only a small number of people, the team, in obedience, filled the night praying for Lillooet. The presence of the Holy Spirit was abundant and powerful during this time of prayer and worship. After the 2 hours of worship, the team noticed that 3 of the people that were invited to the event came to the church: one was the head of the newspaper press, the other served at a homeless shelter in Lillooet, and the last one was a pastor that was originally unwilling to support AYC. Among the three that came, the person serving at a homeless shelter testified in tears after experiencing the heat of the worship: “I have never felt the Holy Spirit so closely in my life. God will use me and I see hope in Lillooet.” Additionally, the pastor that joined the evening promised to provide full support whenever AYC comes to visit Lillooet, breaking the previous stereotype he had about AYC.

The morning of the last day in Lillooet, AYC team drove over to the museum once again to set up the tents, share the smokies, and worship. Because it was the weekends, many more people participated and listened to the worship and had fellowship with the volunteers. Among the participants were the previous chief and the mayor of Lillooet. After experiencing the event, the mayor invited the AYC team to come to Lillooet every month to host a worship concert, expressing his adoration and gratitude towards the event. In acceptance of this invitation, the AYC team is planning to revisit Lillooet from June 28th to 29th and host another worship concert.

On May 25th, the team set off once again to Port Alberni on Vancouver Island to plant the seed of the gospel among the youths. Missionary Jacob Hwang, who newly planted Maaqtusiis Community Church in Ahousaht, along with his family, also joined the event with the youths from Ahousaht. The AYC team met with the youths from Port Alberni and Ahousaht at 1pm at a park to share food and play games, building relationships prior to the worship session. With around 20 youths, the team opened up their hearts and shared their lives with each other at Grace Point Church located in Port Alberni. During the worship session, the team had the opportunity to deeply pray for each of the youths for the restoration of their hearts and bless them. Although the time was limited, the participants were able to deeply experience the love of God towards Port Alberni.

Starting from the 13th of May to the end of August, Seongyoon Chang, one of the leaders of AYC, embarked on his 4 month long journey of ministering the youths in Port Hardy located on Vancouver Island. Seongyoon will be going up to Port Hardy on Mondays and coming back on Fridays to Vancouver for 4 months to build a youth community in the area. He has fellowship with the youths and shares food with up to 30 youths at times, worshipping and praising day by day. We ask you to join us in continuously praying for this ministry that will light the flame of revival among the youths in the Port Hardy area.

Along with Port Hardy, Port Alberni is also in a dire need of missionaries. Although there are youths that have received the gospel and are wishing to spiritually grow and also the youths that are dying without knowing Jesus, they lack the leaders that can give them proper guidance. After 4 months, the short term ministry being run by Seongyoon will come to an end and the youths that have studied the bible and formed the community together in Port Hardy will also be put into a situation where they are without a leader once again. AYC is constantly looking for a missionary that can love and serve these nations.

From July 24th to 27th, 2024 Summer AYC Conference, the main event of AYC, will be hosted in Nanoose Bay. This conference is a significant event where around 150-200 indigenous youths from Saskatchewan, Yellowknife, Vancouver Island and Vancouver area come together to experience the love of God and hear the gospel. AYC is recruiting volunteers who will prepare for this event and grow their hearts toward the indigenous youths. We are expecting many more youths to come to the summer conference, and in need of about 100 young adult volunteers. Moreover, adults in their 30s or older will also have an option to volunteer and support the conference and other volunteers in various ways including campsite cleaning, facility management, driving, medical assistance, and security. Recruitment will continue until mid June, and the volunteer training will start at the end of June. “하나님의 Lillooet과 Port Alberni 지역의 원주민 청소년을 향한 마음”

지난 2013년부터 12년째 원주민 청소년들의 회복을 위해 사역 해 온 AYC (Aboriginal Youth Community)가 5월 중 Lillooet 지역과 Port Alberni 지역을 방문하며 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 시간을 가졌다.

지난 5월 17일부터 18일까지 13명의 멤버로 이루어진 AYC 팀과 밴쿠버 순복음 교회에서 온 7명의 봉사자들은 복음을 전하기 위해 Vancouver 북쪽으로 4시간을 달려 Lillooet에 도착했다. Lillooet에 있는 Lighthouse Church에서 담임 목사로 섬기고 있는 Gary Payne 목사와 연결이 되어 Lillooet 중앙에 위치되어 있는 박물관 옆 광장에서 핫도그를 나누어 주며 예배를 하는 시간을 보낼 수 있었다. 팀은 일찍이 도착해 두 개의 텐트를 설치했다. 한 텐트에서는 무료로 현지 사람들에게 핫도그를 배분해 주었고, 다른 텐트 아래에서는 찬양을 하며 1시부터 6시까지 멈추지 않고 예수님의 이름을 선포하였다. 몇몇 봉사자들은 원주민 청소년 아이들과 만나 농구를 하고 대화를 하며 관계를 쌓을 수 있는 기회도 있었다. 행사에 참가한 모든 사람들을 7시에 Lighthouse Church에 있을 예배로 초대하며 팀은 오후 행사를 마쳤다. 

7시가 되고, 소수의 인원이 예배를 위해 교회를 찾았다. 많은 사람들이 오지 않았음에도 불구하고 팀은 하나님께 순종하며 Lillooet을 위한 기도로 저녁을 채웠고, 그런 가운데 성령님의 임재가 강력하게 임했다. 두 시간 가량의 예배 뒤, 우리는 참석 인원 중에 지역 신문 편집장과 노숙자 사역을 하고 있는 사람과 또 목회자 한 명이 함께 있었다는 것을 알게 되었다. 그 중 노숙자를 섬기는 사역자는 뜨거웠던 예배의 열기를 경험하고 눈물로 이렇게 간증했다. “이처럼 성령님을 가까이 느껴본 건 처음이다. 하나님이 나를 사용하실 것이고 Lillooet에도 희망이 보인다.” 또한, 함께 예배에 참석했던 목회자는 이 전에 AYC에 관하여 가지고 있었던 편견이 깨지며 앞으로 AYC가 Lillooet에 올 때 적극적으로 도움을 줄 것을 약속했다.

마지막 날 아침, AYC팀은 전날 야외 예배를 했던 장소에서 다시 한번 텐트 두 개를 펴고 핫도그 나눔과 예배를 시작했다. 주말 점심이었던 덕에 금요일 오후 보다 훨씬 많은 사람들이 참가하여 함께 찬양을 듣고 교제하는 시간을 가질 수 있었다. 참석 인원 중에는 Lillooet 지역의 전 추장과 시장도 포함 되어 있었다. 예배에 참가한 시장은 매달 Lillooet에 와서 기독교 찬양 콘서트를 해 달라며 AYC 팀을 Lillooet에 초대했다. 지역 신문장 역시 신문을 통해 적극 홍보를 해 주겠다며 팀에게 깊은 호의를 표현했다. AYC 팀은 이 초청에 응하여 6월 28일부터 29일까지 Lillooet을 재방문 해 이틀간 기독교 콘서트형 예배를 개최할 예정이다.

일주일 뒤인 5월 25일, 팀은 한번 더 Vancouver를 떠나 Vancouver Island에 위치해 있는 Port Alberni로 발길을 향했다. Ahousaht에 새로이 개척한 Maaqtusiis Community Church에서 사역을 하고 있는 황상필 선교사 가족 역시 Ahousaht 청소년들을 데리고 25일 행사를 함께 참석하였다.  AYC 팀은 1시에 Port Alberni와 Ahousaht에 사는 여러 원주민 청소년들과 공원에서 만나 음식을 나누고 게임을 하며 교제하는 시간을 가졌다. 그 이후, Port Alberni에 위치한 Grace Point Church 에서 약 20명 정도의 청소년들과 함께 저녁을 먹고 서로에게 마음을 열며 삶에 대한 이야기를 나누었다. 마지막 스케줄인 예배를 할 때에는 아이들 한명 한명에게 깊이 기도를 해 주며 마음의 회복과 축복을 해 줄 수 있는 기회가 있었다. 짧은 시간이었음에도 불구하고 많은 Port Alberni를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 깊이 경험할 수 있는 시간이었다. 

한편, 지난 5월 13일부터 8월 말까지 AYC의 리더 중 한 명인 장성윤 형제가 Vancouver Island 북쪽에 위치한 Port Hardy 지역의 청소년들을 양육하기 위해 4개월 간의 여정을 시작했다. 장성윤 형제는 월요일에 Port Hardy 지역으로 올라가고 금요일에 다시 Vancouver로 내려오는 것을 반복하며 매일 다른 마을 아이들을 데리고 청소년 모임을 꾸리는 사역을 하고 있다. 아이들과 교제하고 저녁을 나누며 많게는 30명의 지역 청소년들과 함께 예배와 찬양에 매일 힘쓰고 있다. Port Hardy 청소년들 사이에 복음의 불길을 불어 넣을 이 사역을 위해 함께 기도 하기를 부탁하는 바이다.

Port Hardy에 이어서 Port Alberni 역시 두 지역 모두 다 선교사가 필요한 상태에 있다. 복음을 받아들이고 영적으로 자라나고 싶은 아이들과 예수님을 모르고 죽어가는 영혼들이 그 지역들에 많이 있음에도 불구하고 그들을 이끌어 줄 수 있는 영적인 리더가 부족한 상황이다. Port Hardy 역시 이번 장성윤 형제의 4개월 간의 단기 선교가 끝나면 Port Hardy에서 함께 성경을 공부하고 함께 공동체를 꾸려나간 아이들은 또 다시 리더 없이 자립해야 하는 상황에 놓이게 된다. AYC는 꾸준히 이 지역들을 마음에 품고 섬겨 줄 수 있는 선교사를 찾는 중에 있다.

다가오는 7월 24일부터 27일까지는 AYC의 메인 행사인 여름 컨퍼렌스가 개최될 예정이다. AYC 여름 컨퍼렌스는 Saskatchewan과 Yellowknife, 그리고 Vancouver Island를 포함한 캐나다 전 지역에 살고 있는 약 150명에서 200명 가량의 원주민 청소년 아이들이 Nanoose Bay Pentecostal Camp 에 모여 하나님을 경험하며 복음을 들을 수 있는 중요한 행사이다. AYC는 이를 위해 함께 준비 하고 원주민 청소년 사역에 대해 마음을 키워 갈 봉사자들을 지금 모집 하고 있다. Summer Conference는 더 많은 원주민 청소년들이 참여 할 것으로 예상하고 있어 100여명의 청년 봉사자들이 필요한 상황이다. 또한 더불어 캠프장 청소 및 시설관리, 운전, 의료, 경비등 청년 봉사자들이 맘껏 사역을 할 수 있도록 지원해주는 30대 이상의 장년 봉사자들도 모집을 할 예정이다. 모집은 6월중순까지 진행되며 6월말부터 선교 훈련을 진행할 예정이다. 이 사역에 함께하며 예수님의 복음을 아이들에게 전할 마음이 주어졌다면 AYC 공식 홈페이지(aycmission.com)에서 봉사 신청을 할 수 있다. 교회 단위 단기팀 참여 문의는 aboriginalyouthcommunity@gmail.com로 할 수 있다.
