God’s Calling for the Indigenous People of Saskatchewan

[Saskatchewan New Life Church Youth Conference]

From December 6 to 9, the AYC worship team traveled to Kamsack, a town in Saskatchewan. Located in the heart of Kamsack, New Life Church is led by Pastor Jamie Desjarlais, an Indigenous pastor who partners with AYC and dedicates himself to youth ministry. Hosting weekly gatherings with up to 50 youth, Pastor Jamie collaborated with an Indigenous team from the United States to organize a 4-day youth conference. Youth from various parts of Saskatchewan, including Kamsack, drove long distances to attend the event. Among them were both newcomers to church and those who had prior AYC experiences.

After arriving in Regina, the AYC worship team drove an additional four hours to reach Kamsack. Unlike a typical Mini AYC event, this conference was hosted by New Life Church, allowing the AYC team to step back and participate alongside the youth in the planned activities. The four-day program was simple, involving time for sports, free activities, and worship sessions, with everyone staying at the church. A unique highlight of this gathering was the participation of Indigenous leaders and youth from Montana, USA, who traveled long hours to join the event. Despite the exhausting journey, they were deeply moved by the worship experience and committed to bringing their youth to the upcoming Spring AYC Conference, emphasizing the need for similar spiritual renewal among Indigenous communities in the U.S.

A Testimony of Transformation

New Life Church has already witnessed remarkable changes among its youth. One notable example is Daisy Potts, a former AYC participant who, now at 19, has emerged as a key leader in the church. Earlier this year, Daisy enrolled in evening seminary classes but temporarily paused her studies to focus on completing high school. The experience has profoundly shaped her faith and daily life. She frequently visits the church to worship alone, actively participates in worship throughout events, and consistently demonstrates a heartfelt and sincere attitude toward God. During the conference, she also served as a caretaker for younger participants and took the initiative in assisting with church duties, contributing significantly to the success of the event.

Reflecting on the conference, Daisy shared:

“That weekend was incredible for me. As life became more comfortable, I felt my faith slipping, so I came to the conference seeking something. During the event, I prayed for someone to affirm that God would use me, and one of the volunteers approached me and prayed exactly what I had been asking for. At that moment, my faith was fully restored. I didn’t ask God for a sign, but He gave me more than I imagined, and I felt love, peace, and joy. I now look forward to future mission trips and working with Indigenous youth.”

The conference, though brief, was impactful in raising many new youth leaders. Numerous participants expressed a desire to attend seminary and serve in ministry. The importance of daily meditation on God’s Word was emphasized, instilling a sense of purpose as God’s workers beyond mere healing from past wounds. This gathering was a meaningful demonstration of discipleship development, which is crucial for the current Indigenous ministry landscape. Through His grace, AYC remains committed to promoting discipleship through repentance and daily devotion, praying for a great revival among Indigenous youth that will lead their communities to Christ.

[Upcoming Ministries: Yellowknife Mini AYC & 2025 Spring AYC Conference]

From February 6–10, 2025, the AYC team will host its first Mini AYC in Yellowknife. This will be a meaningful opportunity to worship and connect with youth directly in their home communities, rather than meeting only at Nanoose Bay or on vision trips. Although AYC has built connections with a small number of youth from Yellowknife over the years, the team prays this gathering will allow the gospel to reach even more young people in the area. The team is already fully formed, so no further applications are being accepted, but prayers for the journey are greatly appreciated.

From March 27–30, 2025, the biannual AYC conference will take place in Nanoose Bay, BC. This gathering brings together 150–200 Indigenous youth from across Canada to worship with one heart. During the conference, participants experience the power of Christ’s blood, freeing them from addictions, depression, and other struggles, and surrender their lives to God. The AYC team firmly believes God will pour out even greater grace during this spring gathering. As the ministry deepens, AYC continues to pray for more youth to step into a deeper relationship with God, anticipating a revival led by Indigenous youth.

[Saskatchewan New Life Church Youth Conference]

12월 6일부터 9일까지 AYC 예배 팀은 Saskatchewan에 있는 Kamsack이라는 마을로 향했다. Kamsack 중심부에 위치해 있는 New Life Church는 AYC와 함께 하고 있는 원주민 목사 Jamie Desjarlais의 교회로 매주 청소년 사역에 많은 힘을 쓰고 있다. 매주 많게는 50명까지 모이는 청소년 모임을 이끌고 있는 Jamie 목사는 미국에서 온 원주민 팀과 더불어 3박 4일동안의 청소년 예배 모임을 개최했다. Kamsack 뿐만 아니라 Saskatchewan 주 곳곳에 거주하는 많은 아이들이 오랜 시간 운전 끝에 교회에 도착해 집회를 참석했다. 그 중에는 이미 AYC에 참석한 경험이 있는 아이들도 있었지만 교회가 처음인 아이들도 섞여있었다.

Regina에 도착 후 AYC 예배 팀은 4시간을 더 운전해 Kamsack에 도착할 수 있었다. 이번 집회는 Mini AYC가 아닌 New Life Church에서 개최한 행사인 만큼 팀은 한 발짝 뒤로 물러나 행사 스케줄에 청소년과 같이 참여하며 일정을 함께 할 수 있었다. 행사가 있는 3박 4일은 아이들과 팀이 함께 교회에서 지내면서 운동 시간과 자유 시간, 그리고 예배를 함께 하는 간단한 구성으로 되어 있었다. 이번 여정의 특별한 점은 바로 미국에서 온 원주민 부족과 함께 할 수 있다는 점이었다. 원주민 부흥의 마음을 갖고 있는 원주민 사역자와 몇몇 청소년들은 미국 Montana 주에서부터 오랜 시간을 달려와 Kamsack에 이르렀다. 고된 여정에도 불구하고 그는 이번 예배를 통해 큰 감동을 받았으며 봄 AYC Conference에도 아이들을 데려와 참석을 하겠다고 약속했다. 그는 이런 동일한 은혜가 미국 원주민들 사이에서도 필요하다고 강조했다.

청소년 사역이 활발한 New Life Church에는 이미 젊은 층들 사이에 변화들이 많이 일어나고 있었다. 그 중 하나인 Daisy Potts는 교회의 중심이 되는 리더로 성장하고 있었다. 그는 AYC 청소년이었다가 최근에 19세가 되어 청년이 되어 올 초중반에는 신학교 저녁반에 다녔다. 지금은 고등학교 졸업을 위해 잠시 신학 공부를 내려두고 학업에 몰두하고 있지만, 그것을 계기로 그의 삶은 크게 달라졌다. 이틀에 한 번은 교회를 찾아와 혼자 예배를 하고 이번 집회 가운데에서도 아침부터 하루종일 찬양을 하는가 하면, 예배의 자세도 진중하고 간절한 마음이 내비춰졌다. 아침 저녁으로 아이들을 챙기고 교회 잡일을 솔선수범하며 이번 행사 진행에 큰 도움이 되기도 했다.

그는 이번 집회에 대해 이렇게 간증했다. “그 주말은 저에게 대단했습니다. 삶에 여유가 생기자 저는 믿음을 잃어가고 있었고 무언가를 바라는 마음으로 집회에 참석했습니다. 집회 중 저는 하나님이 저를 쓰실 것이라는 기도를 누군가에게서 듣게 해달라고 기도하고 있었습니다. 그 때, 봉사자들 중 한명이 저에게 다가와 제가 간구하던 모든 기도를 저에게 해 주었습니다. 그 때, 제 믿음은 완전히 회복되었습니다. 저는 하나님께 증거를 구하진 않았지만 하나님은 저에게 그 이상으로 보여 주셨고, 저는 사랑, 평화, 그리고 기쁨을 느꼈습니다. 저는 앞으로 선교 여행을 다니며 원주민 청소년들과 함께 일할 생각에 미래가 너무 기대가 됩니다.”

이번 집회는 짧고 간결했지만 많은 청소년 리더들이 세워지는 집회였다. 많은 아이들이 신학교를 가고 사역자가 되고 싶다는 의사를 내비쳤고, 매일 묵상의 중요성도 강조되었다. 하나님의 큰 사랑이 그들을 덮으며 상처 치유를 넘어 주의 일꾼으로 쓰임 받는 목적성을 심은 것이다. New Life Church의 원주민 청소년 집회는 현재 원주민 사역 시점에 가장 조명이 되어야 할 제자양육을 피워낸 유의미한 집회였다. 하나님의 은혜로 AYC는 회개를 통한 제자양육, 매일 묵상이라는 중요한 목적을 한 마음으로 가지고 사역을 진행하고 있다. 앞으로 수 많은 원주민 사역자가 나와 예수님의 보혈을 통해 민족을 회개로 이끄는 원주민 대부흥이 일어나기를 기도한다.

[Upcoming Ministries - Yellowknife Mini AYC, 25 Spring AYC Conference]

2월 6일부터 10일까지 AYC팀은 이 전까지는 방문한 적이 없었던 Yellowknife 지역에서 처음으로 Mini AYC를 개최할 계획 중에 있다. 그 동안 Nanoose Bay나 비전트립에서만 마주할 수 있었던 아이들을 본토 마을에서 보고 교제하며 함께 예배를 드릴 수 있다는 것은 큰 의미가 있다. 매년 소수의 Yellowknife 출신 아이들과 연결이 되었지만, 이번 모임을 통하여 더 많은 아이들에게 복음이 닿을 수 있기를 기도하는 바이다. 팀 모집이 완료되어 더 이상의 신청은 받고 있지 않지만, 매 여정마다 많은 기도가 필요하다. 이 글을 보는 모두와 봉사를 희망하는 모두에게 기도로서 사역에 동참하기를 부탁한다.

3월 27일부터 30일까지는 매년 두 번씩 있는 AYC 집회가 진행된다. 150명에서 200명 가량의 원주민 청소년들이 캐나다 전지역에서부터 BC에 위치해있는 Nanoose Bay로 모여 한 마음으로 예배하는 집회이다. 이 집회 기간 동안 아이들은 예수님의 보혈로 인해 마약과 술을 포함한 각종 중독과 우울감에서부터 벗어나 하나님께 삶을 드리는 것이 무엇인지를 경험하게 된다. AYC팀은 이번 봄에는 하나님이 더욱 많고 깊은 은혜를 허락하실 것이라고 확신한다. 사역이 깊어지면서 매년 AYC는 더 많은 아이들이 더 깊은 신앙의 자리로 나아갈 수 있기를 바라며 기도하고 있다. 원주민의 부흥을 위해 함께 기도하며 바라고 실제로 눈으로 보며 경험할 수 있기를 기도한다. 참여 관련 문의는 AYC 공식 홈페이지 (aycmission.com/event-list)에서 신청 가능하며 그 외 질문들은 (604) 356-0052 로 문의 할 수 있다.
