[From Receiver to Giver – Indigenous Youths Shares the Love of God in Vancouver]

[Vancouver Vision Trip]

Seongyoon Chang, one of the AYC volunteers serving in Port Hardy for 4 months, took 7 youths who regularly attended the worship gatherings and hosted the Vancouver Vision Trip from August 14th to the 19th. The purpose of this vision trip was to practice and share the grace they have received during the 4 months. At Potter’s Place Mission located amid East Hastings Street, the youths prepared and shared the food with the homeless and evangelized on the streets for 6 days as a part of the mission trip. It was a blessing to witness the youths that used to always be on the receiving end of the gospel and prayers grow spiritually and now giving the love of God to those that are in need. During the Vancouver mission trip, the indigenous youths were able to connect with God through morning devotionals. Although attending early morning prayer service was challenging and new to these youths, they learned how important it is to begin their day by giving their gratitude to the Lord.  

During the vision trip, the youths had the opportunity to tour around Summit Pacific Bible College. Two of the youths who participated in this tour confessed that post-graduation, they wish to attend school and go back to their village as a minister to help others and guide them to God. One of the youths, Leighla Nelson, testified as such during the Sunday service at Hosanna Hanin Church. “My family is fighting against addictions, and I am also struggling with it too. But I know now that God is with me in all those tough times and pains. Before Vancouver Vision Trip, I didn’t even think about going to university, but after visiting Summit Pacific Bible College, I realized that being with Jesus and knowing about heaven would give me bright hope in my life. If I decide to go to that school, I want to be a pastor. I feel that God is leading me in that direction. I think God wants my voice to be louder in my hometown as I spread the gospel there.” Leighla is currently praying and preparing for her application to the school. We pray that the indigenous youths will become local pastors of their nations and spread the love of God to those around them. 

[Port Hardy Mini AYC]

From August 29th to the 31st, AYC hosted Port Hardy Mini AYC as the last event of the Port Hardy ministry. Working together with Por Hardy Christian Fellowship (The Bridge), the team worshipped the young generations of Port Hardy in praise and gratitude. Towards the end of the Mini AYC, 10 volunteers and approximately 20 indigenous young generations were gathered for outdoor worship, as they ate and had fellowship with one another in Jesus, building relationships with each other. During the last service, the team prayed and blessed the people with the message that they should dream about a brighter future as they walk with Jesus, for Jesus is with them. Many who heard the gospel message received the vision and promised to go deeper into the word of God as they walked with Jesus.

Before the final worship began, one of the youths who has been with AYC throughout this year expressed her desire to receive baptism. Despite the cold, windy weather, the youth was full of a heart of determination and confessed that she wanted to forget about the past and follow Jesus. As she prayed with the minister and received the baptism in the ocean, she testified as so. “After getting prayed for and coming out of the water, the world became so much brighter. I felt so much lighter, and I felt like I saw Jesus standing beside me.” During the last worship service, she danced and praised and prayed with all her heart, confessing that she would follow and walk with Jesus. The AYC team prayed for her to choose Jesus despite the different obstacles and for her to walk the path of obedience faithfully. We ask for your prayer over this beautiful soul, for her faith to grow continuously. 

[Upcoming Ministries - Port Alberni Mini AYC, 24 SK Oct Mini AYC]

We are currently looking for volunteers for the upcoming September and October ministries. There will be Port Alberni Mini AYC from September 27th to 28th. The youths in Port Alberni as well as those that are from Ahousaht will stay at a church overnight and worship as they experience the grace and the healing that they once received at AYC. We ask for your prayers over these youths and for the Holy Spirit to touch the hearts of these people so that they may stand firm as warriors of the Lord through all the hardships that they are experiencing. From October 11th to the 13th, there will be Saskatchewan Mini AYC. We need many volunteers who can pray and prepare together as it is projected that there will be just as many youths as there usually are during our main AYC conference. [Vancouver Vision Trip]

Port Hardy에서 4개월간 단기 사역을 하고 있는 장성윤 형제는 그 동안 예배에 꾸준히 참석한 7명의 청소년들과 함께 8월 14일부터 19일까지 Vancouver Vision Trip을 진행했다. 이번 비전 여행의 목적은 원주민 청소년들이  그동안 받은 은혜를 이웃들과 함께 나눔으로 배운것을 손수 실천하는 데 있었다.   노숙자 거리인 East Hastings Street 중앙에 위치해 있는 Potter’s Place Mission에서 아이들은 노숙자들에게 음식을 손수  준비해 나누고 노방전도를 하며 6일간의  단기 선교에 참석하게 되었다. 그 동안 말씀을 배우고 기도를 받는 입장에 있던 아이들이 어느새 영적으로 성장해 하나님의 사랑을 그들보다 어려운 사람들에게 나누며 위로하는 모습을 보는 것은 참으로 감사한 일이 아닐 수 없다. Vancouver에서 선교 실습을 하는 동안  원주민 청소년들은  아침 묵상을 하며 하나님과 교제하는 경험을 할 수 있었다. 이들에게는 너무나 새롭고 도전적인 이른 새벽 기도를 통해 주님께로부터 주어진 하루를 다시 주님께 감사함으로 올려드리는 것으로 하루를 시작하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 배우는 계기였다.  

일정 중에 Summit Pacific Bible College를 견학하는 시간이 있었다. 견학한  청소년들중 두 명은 고등 학교  졸업 후 신학교에 진학해 학업을 마친뒤 사역자로서 그들의 마을에  다시 돌아가 이웃들을 도우며 그들을  모두 하나님께 인도하는 사람이 되고 싶다고 말했다.  Vancouver Vision Trip  참가자중 한 청년 Leighla Nelson은 호산나 한인교회 주일 예배 중 이렇게 간증했다. “내 가족들은 마약과 술 중독과 싸우고 있고 나도 역시 지금 힘든 시간을 보내고 있다. 하지만 이제는 하나님이 내 모든 고난과 고통 가운데에 함께 하신다는 것을 알게 되었다. Vancouver Vision Trip 전까지는 대학에 갈 생각조차 못했지만 신학교 견학을 하고 난 뒤, 예수님과 동행하며 학업을 통해 하나님 나라를 알아가는 것이 내 삶에 밝은 희망을 가져다 줄 것이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 내가 그 학교에 가게 되면 나는 목회자의 길을 걷고 싶다. 하나님이 그 길로 나를 이끄시는 것을 느낀다. 나의 고향에서 복음 전하는 나의 목소리가 울려 퍼지는 것을 원하시는 것 같다.” Leighla는 현재 신학교 입학을 놓고 하나님께 기도로 간구하며 준비하고 있다. 원주민 청소년들이 주님 안에서 굳건히 현지 목회자로 세워져, 그들의 이웃들에게  하나님의 사랑을 하루 빨리 전할 수 있기를 축복하고 기도한다.

[Port Hardy Mini AYC]

8월 29일부터 31일일까지는 Port Hardy 사역의 마지막을 장식하는 Port Hardy Mini AYC가 있었다. 지역 교회인 Port Hardy Christian Fellowship (The Bridge)과 협력하여 어린 아이들부터 청소년들까지 함께 모여 경배와 찬양으로 주님께 예배를 드렸다. Mini conference 마지막 부분에는  10여명의 봉사자들이 20명 정도의 청소년들과 어린 아이들을 모아 야외 예배를 진행 하였고 식사와 교제를 통해 예수님 안에서 친밀함을 쌓아가는 시간을 가지며 예배를 마쳤다. 마지막 예배에서 선교팀들은 예수님이 그들과 함께 하시니, 그들이 예수님과 동행하며 그 분이 주시는 비전을 받아 보다 아름다운 미래를 꿈꿀 것을 기도하며 축복했다. 복음을 들은 많은이들이 권면을 받아들이고 하나님의 말씀에 더욱 더 깊이 들어갈 것이며 예수님과 동행하겠다고 약속함에 선교의 보람을 느끼는 시간이었다.

마지막 예배가 시작되기 전, 올해 AYC와 꾸준히 함께 해 왔던 청소년 중 한 명이 세례를 받고 싶다고 말했다. 다짐에 찬 이 청년은 찬 바람이 아득히 불었음에도 불구하고, 과거를 잊고 예수님을 따르고 싶다고 고백하며 바닷가에서 세례를 받았다. 기도와 세례를 받은 뒤, 그녀는 이렇게 간증했다. “기도와 물 세례를 받고 나온 뒤로부터 세상이 훨씬 밝아 보였다. 마음은 이전과 다르게 가벼워졌고, 예수님을 본 것 같은 느낌이 들었다.” 그녀는 이후에 있었던 예배에서 온 마음을 다해 춤과 찬양과 함께 기도를 하며 예수님과 동행하겠다고 다짐하고 또 다짐했다. 앞으로 많은 장애물이 다가와도 매번 예수님을 선택하며 아름다운 신앙의 길을 걸을 수 있도록 이 청년을 위해 AYC 팀들은 기도로 축복하였다. 이 글을 읽는 이들도 이 청소년의 신앙이 잘 자라길 기도 부탁한다.

[Upcoming Ministries – Port Alberni Mini AYC, 24 SK Oct Mini AYC]

8월 Port Hardy conference를 마치고 AYC는 돌아오는 9월, 10월에 있을 사역에 뜻을 함께 할 봉사자들을 모집 중에 있다. 9월 27일부터 28일까지는 Port Alberni 지역에서 청소년들을 대상으로 Mini AYC를 개최 할 예정이다. Ahousaht에서 오는 아이들을 포함해 아이들과 교회에서 하룻밤을 지내며 AYC에서 받았던 은혜의 감동을 다시 한번  경험할 수 있도록 예배를 준비 중이다. 성령님이 아이들의 마음을 만져주시어 그들이 겪고 있는 힘든 일들을 잘 넘어서 어엿한 주님의 용사들로 굳건히 설수 있도록 지혜와 용기를 위한 기도를 이 글을 읽는 모든 독자들에게 간청한다. 10월에는 11일부터 13일까지 Saskatchewan에서 Mini AYC가 개최된다. 매년 봄과 여름에 있는 메인 AYC에 버금가는 많은 원주민 청소년들이 올 것으로 예상이 되는 만큼 많은 기도와 간구함으로 함께 준비 과정을 거쳐나갈 봉사자들이 많이 필요하다. 아이들과 함께 지내며 예배하고 사랑으로 예수님을 전할 마음이 있는 봉사자들이 있다면, AYC 공식 홈페이지 (aycmission.com/event-list)에서 신청 가능하며 그 외 질문들은 전화 (604) 356-0052 로 문의 할 수 있다. 

[Vision Trip to Korea]

7월 27일부터 8월 7일까지 AYC팀은 각자 다른 지역 (Ahousaht BC, Cote Saskatchewan, Behchoko Northwest Territories) 출신의 8명의 원주민 청년, 청소년들을 데리고 한국으로 향했다. 한국 비전 트립의 목적은 식민지 생활로 인해 겪었던 세대 간 트라우마, 우울증, 중독 등의 어려움들을 극복하고 예수님 안에서 원주민 지역 마을의 리더로 성장할 수 있도록 격려하는 것이다. 여정 내내 원주민 아이들은 한국이 일본 식민지 생활과 6.25 전쟁의 황폐함에서 벗어서 세계에서 가장 발전된 나라들 중 하나로 거듭날 수 있었는지 배울 수 있는 기회가 있었다. 원주민 아이들은 여러 군데를 돌아다니며 성령님을 경험하고 한국의 역사에 대해 볼 수 있었다. 원주민 아이들은 한국인들이 1. 근면, 경의, 국가적 단합, 미래 세대를 위한 희생을 통해 빈곤과 혹독한 시기를 극복한 것과 2. 외국 기독교 선교사들의 사랑과 섬김을 받은 것과 3. 다른 것을 제치고 하나님을 붙든 것을 배울 수 있었다. 

또한, 청소년 아이들은 교회의 하숙집 프로그램을 통해 한국 기독교 가정에서 살아가는 것이 어떤 것인지 경험하게 되었다. 깨지고 불안정한 가정에서 온 아이들은 호스트 가족들과 함께 먹고, 함께하고, 묵상과 기도를 하며 하나님의 사랑을 느꼈다. 이러한 많은 경험을 통해 청소년 아이들은 캐나다에 있는 본인의 마을을 향한 사랑과 희망의 불길을 얻게 되었다.
